Marie Wernham - UNICEF Child Rights Education Toolkit

Abstract: Child rights education (CRE) empowers children and adults to bring about change in their immediate environment and the world at large to ensure that the rights of all children are fully realised. The presentation will explain what is meant by CRE and the ‘child rights approach’ and the ways in which CRE can take place in a range of contexts - including with professionals, caregivers, the corporate sector, the media, and children’s groups, as well as in the formal education sector which is the focus of the UNICEF toolkit. Biography: Marie is an independent international child rights consultant specialising in policy development, training, research, evaluation and advocacy. She has worked with children, NGOs, UNICEF and the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on topics including child rights education and the child rights approach, child participation, child protection and children in the justice system. She has worked in more than 30 countries and has produced a number of training manuals, practical toolkits and participatory research reports. She has a Masters degree in Human Rights and a Graduate Certificate in Arts for Change (working with children, young people and their families through creative arts and play).
